Eyes Clear, Heart Open: The Yoga of Transformative Justice

Join Michelle Johnson and Dani Leah Strauss on New Years Eve for a heart-centered practice focused on reconnecting with our bodies, hearts and spirits. Oppressive systems work to keep us disconnected from our own bodily wisdom. In this workshop, we will explore the practice of decolonizing our bodies and our capacity for pleasure in order to engage in radical embodiment. Radical embodiment practice is an act of resistance, an opportunity to reclaim our own capacity to experience the body as a source of power and strength that can support us in taking skillful action in the world for the collective good of all. In tending to ourselves on this sacred day of renewal, we create the conditions for collective care and liberation to occur in the new year. This workshop will include movement, mantra and meditation. Please bring a journal, wear comfy clothing, and bring anything else that helps you feel nurtured and supported. Yoga mats, blankets, bolsters, and tea will be provided. This is an all levels workshop and experience. Join us!

Kirtan (Sounds for the Heart)

Kirtan (Sounds for the Heart)

With Dani Leah Strauss & Ros Schwartz

Kirtan is a practice of call-and-response chanting, designed to help us to chart a path inward toward self-acceptance and joy. This practice soothes the thinking mind and opens the door to the heart with the support of mantra, vibration, and the surrender of the self to something greater.

When we chant, we literally use the vibration of mantras to burst through the knots that bind our energy and clarify the connection between the heart and the throat.

Kirtan is designed for every emotion – we offer all our feelings to the universe and clear out our internal cobwebs. By singing together, we support and strengthen each other, and are reminded that we are in community.

Kirtan is an ancient Bhakti yoga practice using sacred song and the fuel of our emotions as an expression of devotion and gratitude. It was introduced to the world by Sri Krishna Chaitanya – he offered his first public kirtan in 1510 in Bengal.

We do not present ourselves as experts on this practice. We have gleaned joy from these songs, and endeavor to offer that opportunity for others, in full acknowledgement that this is not the tradition of our birth.

Yin Yoga

With Dani Leah Strauss, LCSWA, MSW, E-RYT 500

Thursdays, 6:00 - 7:00 pm

Yoga practice is a deeply supportive element on the path toward intimacy with one’s self and others.

Yin yoga is for you if you are tired, in need of deep restoration, or searching for mindful community. This practice is especially helpful for clearing the detritus from receiving 24/7 input from the outside world. This practice is subtle, slow, and can affect us on a physical, emotional, and spiritual level.

All levels of experience, all bodies, all humans are welcome. No experience needed, just a desire to cultivate curiosity and a willingness to be kind to those who are here to practice alongside you.

This class is donation-based, pay what you can. Your offerings contribute to the sliding scale fund that allows clients to receive therapy for reduced fees.

Feel free to write Dani with questions: email@danileahstrauss.com

Dani (she/her) is a queer-identified sex-positive therapist, yoga teacher, and doula. She incorporates elements of physical, emotional, and somatic awareness and practice into her yoga classes. She works to support survivors of trauma in reclaiming their pleasure and fulfillment through body awareness and heart healing. Read more about Dani here.

Resilience-Centered, Trauma-Responsive Yoga for LGBTQQIA+ folks

With Patty Adams, MSW, LCSW, E-RYT
Mondays 6 – 7:15pm
September 16, 23, 30 and October 7

Click here for more info and to access registration materials.

Cost: $100, paid in full before the start of the series.
Please reach out to discuss reduced tuition and payment options if needed.

Registered participants in this series are welcome to opt-in to Yoga for Queers weekly drop-in classes on Wednesdays for $5 / class.

Accessibility: To access the yoga class space, participants will need to descend one flight of stairs (approximately 10 steps).

In this four-week, closed series, a small group of LGBTQQIA+ folks will gather to practice yoga in a mindful way that centers each individual’s power of choice. Participants are offered the opportunity to explore: being in the present moment, making choices, taking effective action, and being open to shared authentic experience.

Many health and relationship struggles are often connected to unresolved trauma, including anxiety, depression, behavioral issues, relationship stress, and addiction. Through a resilience-centered, trauma-responsive approach to mindful movement and embodied exploration, participants will be invited to come back home to their bodies, to their inherent wholeness, and to their innate ability to heal.

Patty is a community-based healing artist, somatic psychotherapist, experienced yoga teacher, founder/organizer of Yoga for Queers and Misfits, and language justice advocate. As a queer, white, cis fat femme woman committed to collective liberation, Patty shares yoga within an anti-racist, anti-oppressive, body positive and healing justice framework. See Patty’s full bio and training credentials here.
